Volunteer at the Freedom 5k on July 4! Be a good person and help the club, a great local race AND other runners! 33 jobs have already been taken by volunteers, but we still need the following jobs filled:

Aid Station 3 (at finish line - cut up watermelon) 8:30-10am - 1
    Finish Line Workers 9-10am - 4

Find the signup form here. You must sign up online!

Fun fact: when Second Wind provides timing services and/or volunteers for non-club races like this one, the race pays us for that help! So your volunteer time earns you Build-A-Better-Second-Wind points AND helps provide club sponsored events like our pizza parties, summer cookout and the banquet.

Fun Run: Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Meadowbrook Park in Urbana (at the intersection of Windsor and Vine - there is a parking lot and you can park on both sides of Vine as you approach the park). We will start out with a timed-ish mile running west and then south, followed by one or more two mile loops continuing in the same direction. Not sure you're up for a fast mile? The Relaxed-Pace Running Group (RPRG) does a 11-15 minute mile pace and walking is welcome. Both these groups go in the opposite direction, so no matter your speed you'll see other club members!

No Fun Run on July 4!

Post Run: Esquire in Champaign (let's grab a table outside and enjoy summer)! Don't plan to run? Come out at 7:30.
Got an idea where we should go? Or feedback (good OR bad) about a place we went? Email me!
Speedwork: Wednesday at 6pm. This week, we will meet at the track at Centennial High School in Champaign. Come participate in a fun and different workout each week. Runners of all speeds are welcome to attend and speedwork will alternate between meeting at Centennial and at Orchard Downs.
Summer marathon training: Saturday at 7am. This week we meet at Hessel Park for 10 miles. Even if you're not planning on running a fall marathon, there's a group run distance for you since all routes have an easy way to make a 3-5 mile run. Unlike our Spring training program, these runs are open to all club members. Check out the schedule here - routes are not final for all weeks, but starting location and distance options are listed. Here is this week's route (turns will be marked with chalk so you won't get lost): http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=590434

    Summer weather and water reminder:
The club brings a cooler of water to the Tuesday night and Saturday morning group runs, but no cups - bring your own bottle. Water is not provided at speedwork. In the event of severe weather/electrical storms, use caution and common sense when going on a run. Decisions to cancel fun runs and speedwork due to weather will be made in as timely a matter as possible.

It's not too late to sign up for the good form running clinic! Tomorrow, Van from Body n' Sole will come to do a good form running clinic. He will be bringing the ipad that they use in the store to record video of each participant's gait, and offering guidance on what each individual runner can do to improve. It will take place in the grass near the shelter at 6pm. Many members have done this and it is really helpful to all runners, no matter what your focus is. HOWEVER! It costs $10, and you need to sign up in advance. The money will go to a local charity. You need to call Body n Sole at (217) 356-8926‬ to reserve your spot.

Also tomorrow, the Altra sales rep will be at the fun run. They will arrive at 6 pm and let people run in Altra shoes (https://www.altrarunning.com/) during the fun run. This is a great way to test out a new kind of shoes so I encourage everyone who is altra-curious to do it! They have a wider toe box and heel and are zero drop. A Summer marathon training starts Saturday, June 24 at 7am! We will start with just 8 miles (broken into a three and a five mile loop), so even if you're not planning on running a fall marathon, there's a group run distance for you. Unlike our Spring training program, these runs are open to all club members. Check out the schedule here - routes are not final for all weeks, but starting location and distance options are listed.
Volunteer at the Freedom 5k - now with more volunteer positions listed, including cleanup. Find the signup form here.

  • 5 reasons to volunteer to help at the Freedom 5k!

We need quite a few volunteers for the Freedom 5k on July 4th! Positions we need filled are listed on our sign up genius page (https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/409054aaaa82fabf49-freedom) so volunteer today!  Not convinced yet? Here are 5 reasons to be a good person and volunteer!

     1. When you volunteer for races you get Build A Better Second Wind points that can earn you cool SWRC swag at the end of year banquet.  2. Some of these positions you can volunteer and still race in this race circuit event. So you can get BBSW points AND race circuit points, both in the same morning.  3. You get a lot less sweaty handing cups of water out than you do actually running.  4. Where else will you wear those ridiculous flag-print outfit you have? 5. It's the easiest way to guarantee you get a good seat at the Fourth of July parade (which follows the race along pretty much the same route).  Please note we will be adding a few pre-race-day packet picket slots so check back later if that is your kind of thing to help at.

    Thank you!

  • summer/fall long runs begin June 24 and end October 28

Looking to run a fall marathon? We've got Saturday morning group runs at 7am every week from June 24 through the end of October! With distances for those training for the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon/Half Marathon, plus longer distances for early-season racers and a way to make every run a shorter distance for those of you just looking to get out for a few miles with a group, this summer is the one to not let the heat get to you.

Find the schedule of where we are meeting and links to the ALL NEW routes here! Routes may still be in development and subject to change but starting locations are final.
