second wind events 8/7-8/14

HELP WANTED! Second Wind is in need of several long-term volunteer commitments. We are looking for a new newsletter editor, a communications coordinator, and additional web team members. Experience is not required, but is helpful. You don't need to be a serious runner, either - maybe your nonrunning partner would be an excellent fit and we would be happy to have them! Find the job descriptions here and at the bottom of this email. Nominal deadline is August 15. 

Summer cookout is Tuesday August 14! It features club-provided hamburgers, veggie burgers and buns, and you bring a side dish and your own beverage of choice. We expect the first burgers to come off the grill soon after the fun run ends, so come out at 6:30 if you are not planning to join in the run. There will also be an activity to help the board come up with ideas, so please come and share! (Participation in the activity is not required). 

Women's Fitness 5k registration is open! The race is Sunday, September 9 at 4pm at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana and is for female-identifying runners and walkers ONLY (male-identifying-people can spectate and volunteer - link coming soon). Find more info about our oldest club race, in its' 33rd year, and the link to register here!
Fall Women's Running Group registration is open! You don't need to be a beginner - just to want the camaraderie of a low pressure group. We are piloting a two-part fall session. Session 1 began July 17 and Session 2 begins September 11. Find out more here:
Summer weather and water reminder: The club brings a cooler of water to the Tuesday night group runs, but no cups - bring your own bottle. Water is not provided at speedwork. CLUB RUNS WILL BE CANCELED IMMEDIATELY IF THERE IS THUNDER OR LIGHTNING SEEN. This is because of our insurance requirements. It is not smart to run in an open area in an electrical storm, and google can show you many photos of running shoes that were on runners who didn't make the right choice. Decisions to cancel fun runs and speedwork preemptively due to weather will be made in as timely a matter as possible (ideally by 15 minutes prior to the start, via both email and facebook). In the event of severe weather/electrical storms at other times, use caution and common sense when going on a run by yourself. 
Tuesday Fun Run: Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Meadowbrook Park in Urbana (at the intersection of Windsor and Vine - there is a parking lot and you can park on both sides of Vine as you approach the park). We will start out with a timed-ish mile running west and then south, followed by one or more two mile loops continuing in the same direction. Not sure you're up for a fast mile? The Relaxed-Pace Running Group (RPRG) does a 11-15 minute mile pace and walking is welcome. We've heard that this group is "too fast", so if you're usually the fastest person in this group, try out the "regular" pace group one week and see where you belong. And, the only way we will have a true turtle group is if the turtles of Second Wind come to the fun runs. Don't worry if you are "too slow" - there's no such thing! Your legs might be walking, but you can be running in your mind (or walking there too - it's okay. These groups go in the opposite direction, so no matter your speed you'll see other club members.

Speed work: Wednesday at 6pm. We will meet at the Arboretum parking lot (at Lincoln and St Mary's in Urbana. Come participate in a fun and different workout each week. Runners of all speeds are welcome to attend and speedwork may alternate meeting locations. Here is a google pin of the parking lot:
Riggs Run: Thursday at 6:30pm at Riggs Brewery on High Cross. A 4-6 mile run, followed by refreshments. BYOfood (often there's a food truck). 
Long run/fall marathon training: Saturday at 7am. Nancy McCarty is sending out a weekly email with all the details. MAKE SURE YOU SIGN IN AND OUT. This week's run starts at Lake of the Woods - Rt 47 lot. Find the schedule here.
